DC150 Review

2002 DC150 2002 DC150

Mike Wagner's CARVIN DC150:

Specifications:
- Pearl Silver Mahogany body with 1/2" figured maple top
- Two piece mahogany neck with tung oil finish on back of neck
- Ebony fretboard with mother-of-pearl block inlays and medium jumbo frets
- Pearl Silver painted headstock with engraved truss rod cover, "WAGS III"
- M22T/C22N pickups with coil splitters
- Black chrome hardware, Straploks by Dunlop, and Sperzel locking tuners
- Vintage tweed case

Appearance: The finish is very well done. There are no paint splashes, runs, or bubbles anywhere. The seam between the body paint and the tung oil neck is crisp. The paint on the headstock remained on the top of it, as the tung oil was on the back and sides of the headstock. Very well done. The wiring inside the electronics cavity is neat with no poor soldering or any loose components.

Construction: The joining of the neck to the body sides leaves no indication of a seam. Very smooth top and bottom. All components are securely in place with no rattling.

Feel: The weight is slightly lighter than my maple neck, koa body DC400. The neck seems to be well balanced with the body. I don't feel that it is neck heavy in any way. The low profile Tune-O-Matic bridge is nice. Although I still prefer the FT6 bridge, this bridge fits the bill. The tung oil neck is a dream. After playing this, my painted neck definitely feels slower to me. I'm sold on tung oil necks now.

Tone: The M22T bridge pickup is the same as in my DC400, but there is a distinct difference between my DC400 and this guitar. The tone of the DC150 definitely has more bottom end to it, which is exactly what I wanted. The sound is strong, clear, clean, and punchy. With the tap engaged, it has a more chimey sound. It, too, is very usuable, but doesn't give a true single coil sound.

The neck pickup is the C22N. It is definitely a good sounding pickup in this guitar. Very clear sound. Excellent compliment to the M22T. Throw in a little overdrive and you've got a great PAF sound. Tapped is quite enjoyable as well.

Both pickups at the same time gives a very usable tone. I like this setting for a lot of rhythm work.

With any of the pickup settings, string clarity is present. I am very happy with Carvin's pickups.

Overall: Every guitar I own is unique and was bought for a specific purpose. I am very glad that I purchased this guitar. It gives me a nice low end sound while retaining clarity of the upper strings. This is my third Carvin guitar and I am still very impressed with the great job Carvin does for me.
