Carvin Customer Service/DC200 Review

The following message was originally posted on Carvin's Bulletin Board System on 20 September 2002 by Nubbs. Although this may seem inappropriate for the instrument reviews section, I posted it here because it displays the great measures Carvin will take in order to keep its customers satisfied. An excellent Customer Service department is crucial to the success of any business, which helps to explain why, after nearly 60 years in business, Carvin is stronger than ever.

In our brief correspondence before posting this to the Gallery, Joe wished to add the following comments:

"For the record my DC200 is a fantastic piece; I really love playing it. It is the first guitar that I can actually play some of the more complex diminished, 11th and 13th chords. I have owned a Gibby LP from the Custom Shop for 5 years and I have decided to put it up for sale. I just wish Carvin would build a jazz box 'cause that is where my cash would go.

Carvin was right there for me with help, parts and cash. They are true to their word and I will only buy from them from now on."

You all should know this!

I bought a DC200 back in June from the inventory website. After the guitar showed up I was unhappy with it. I spoke with my salesperson (Sean) and was provided fantastic customer service. I did send the guitar back, and working with the management at Carvin, was able to have an exact duplicate made, at the suggestion of Sean's supervisor, of what I purchased from the inventory website.

Four or five weeks later, the new replacement was delivered as promised; I was tickled pink that it was beautiful, and they took extraordinary care in building the guitar for me. I was really pleased because what I paid for the original guitar was almost half of what I would have paid had I ordered the guitar with the same options as the original. In other words, they did not charge me any additional money. Carvin only wanted to make me a happy customer. They succeeded.

After playing the "newly" built replacement it became clear that the bridge pickup was only working part-time. I called and spoke with Albert in the repair shop and he suggested opening the cavity and look over the solder joints. He also at no cost to me sent a replacement pickup and pickup selection switch.

Before receiving the pickup and the switch, I took the guitar to my local music shop where I have taken guitar lesson for six years. I had one of the guys there look at it and after poking around in the cavity the pickup started working.

At this point I was getting ready to send the pickup and switch back to Carvin. But the pickup quit again. This time I had the replacment bridge pickup installed and sent the invoice to Carvin, who in turn reimbursed me for the labor.

THANK YOU CARVIN!!

The guitar still did not sound right to me, so I again called Albert. It was at this point that Albert and I decided to ship the guitar back for warranty repairs.

Albert received the guitar six or so days later and he went through it. He said it was up to specs. Albert even asked if I wanted to upgrade the pickups from the standard that comes with the DC200; I declined because I had not really had the chance to hear the pickups that came as standard equipment.

The guitar came back a number of days later and that first night I rushed home from work to plug it in to my Fender ProSonic. Much to my surprise the guitar was buzzing and was sensitive to static by touching anything metal. I was dumbfounded to say the least. The next day I shot an e-mail to Albert and we discussed what was happening. I e-mailed Albert everyday for almost a week.

ALBERT, THANK YOU FOR NEVER GETTING UPSET WITH ME. YOU HELPED ME SORT OUT THE PROBLEM AND WERE ALWAYS READY TO DO WHATEVER I NEEDED.

What it finally came down to was the single coil hum. My amp is a high-gain animal and because the amp was plugged into a strip plug with other electronic equipment, it was picking up RF from a bunch of sources including the pickups when in the single coil position.

After plugging the amp into just the wall socket and making sure the ground was working, I finally can hear my guitar for the very first time. As Jackie Gleason used to say, "How sweet it is!"

In closing I cannot say enough about how Carvin - specifically Sean, the other guys in sales, Albert, Carl, and Sean's supervisor (sorry, I cannot remember his name) - treated me. They never complained, and they were always ready to make me happy no matter what it took. In addition, they reimbursed me for all shipping and labor costs.

In the end, I have just what I wanted: a great guitar that I simply love to play. It was all worth it and I only hope Carvin will build a jazz box in the future. I will be happy to purchase sight unseen.

Thank you Carvin.

Joe a.k.a. Nubbs
